What type of padding should you choose for Amigurumis?

To make perfect amigurumis and stuffed animals, there is one element that we can sometimes neglect but which is nevertheless essential, and that is the choice of stuffing.

Because indeed, what could be more unfortunate than spending (pleasurable) time on its creation only to end up “almost ruining everything” by choosing unsuitable padding. It's a bit like making your best cake by using the wrong yeast ;)

In this article, I will try to introduce you to the different types of padding wadding, their advantages and disadvantages and also give you some advice.

Types of Stuffing for Amigurumis

1. Synthetic Padding (Polyester)

Advantages: Polyester filling is the most popular because it is simply the most fluffy and will give the best appearance for amigurumis. It is lightweight, durable, machine washable, hypoallergenic, rot proof (meaning it will not mold) providing optimal cushioning.
Disadvantages: Unfortunately, it is not the most environmentally friendly material being synthetic. However, recycled versions like ours greatly mitigate the environmental impact.

2. Cotton Padding

Benefits: Cotton is a natural fiber that is both soft and hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for amigurumis. It is also biodegradable.
Disadvantages: Cotton can pack over time and does not always retain its original shape. It is therefore necessary to regularly restore its fluffiness by handling it. It may also require special care when washing and drying. It makes the stuffed animals heavier and it can be difficult to pass needles inside to make eyes or noses for example.

3. Wool Padding

Advantages: Wool is both hypoallergenic and offers good breathability. As with cotton, it is a good eco-friendly option if obtained sustainably.
Cons: Wool can be more expensive and may require hand washing. Like cotton, wool is less lofty and heavier.

The observation is quite simple, the most effective padding by far is polyester padding for the plump appearance which is generally the most sought after. However, unfortunately, it is not the most ecological.

At LilyWools , we were keen to try to offer the best possible compromise for our padding , which is why we offer padding:

  • 100% polyester for ultra lofty appearance
  • Recycled to reduce environmental impact
  • Made in France to support the local production of our industries
  • Easily machine washable and rot-proof
  • At an affordable price

Some tips for using stuffing in your amigurumis

Fraying: Fray the filling before using it to make it more fluffy. This allows for better distribution and a more fluffy appearance.
Filling: Insert the frayed filling little by little to avoid jamming and achieve an even distribution. Make sure there is cotton wool in all the hard-to-reach places, including the extremities of the limbs.
Tools: You can use scissors, a hook, a pen to help you reach hard-to-reach areas and distribute the padding well.
Finishing: Once the padding is in place, carefully close the openings with strong stitching to hold the padding in place.
