Basic materials to start amigurumis: Everything you need to get started.
Amigurumis, are adorable little crocheted creatures, requiring little but still a few essential supplies to get started.
Here is a list of the main elements you should have to start making your amigurumis:
1. The Wire
The choice of thread is very important depending on the project and the result you want. We'll quickly explain it to you below. (for more information on this subject, you can refer to my article: “Which yarn to choose for Amigurumis?”)
At LilyWools , we offer the three types of yarn most used for amigurumis:
- Chenille yarn: Chenille yarn is known for its softness and bouncy texture, which makes it ideal for creating soft amigurumis, stuffed animals, comforters, pokemons and even large and small children's toys.
- Fluffy yarn : As with chenille yarn, fluffy yarns are mainly used to make soft toys, cuddly toys and even softer but also fluffy amigurumis.
- Cotton Yarn : This is surely the thread that was most used for making amigurumis. It is both resistant, durable and allows for more precise creations. However, it does not have this soft appearance that is more fashionable today.
2. Stuffing for Amigurumi
It is this fiber that we put inside stuffed animals and amigurumis. It is essential to finalize your creations and give the fluffy appearance to the soft toys. There are many types of padding.

3. The Hook
A hook that matches the size of your yarn is important. Typically, an appropriately sized hook is recommended for you on yarn ball labels.
For greater comfort, we recommend hooks with silicone/ergonomic handles . We offer 2 different ranges at LilyWools.
In general :
- Chenille wire: 4.0 mm to 5.0 mm
- Fluffy wire: 3.5 mm to 5.0 mm
- Cotton thread: 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm
4. Accessories to help you
To help you and make your life easier during your creations, we advise you to use stitch markers, this will allow you to easily follow your stitches, stitches, patterns.

5. Accessories to bring your Amigurumis to life
To bring your amigurumis/soft toys to life and make them even cuter, there are more and more accessories that are being imagined. The most used and which have the most effect are generally safety eyes.
There are all kinds and sizes to choose from depending on the size of your stuffed animals and what you like ;). There are very basic black eyes, colored eyes, there is something for everyone.
